En su paladar es una fiesta el fin del ayuno, en su rostro la sonrisa plena mira la tormenta que ya se cierne...
Desde muy alto en la nube miro y veo al venerable anciano, ¿los ojos entreabiertos? ¿los ojos entrecerrados? Quietud perfecta, aliento calmo casi como de muerte, su mente ha muerto un instante que será pues todos los instantes.
Él mira furtivamente la nube gris-presagio y sus labios murmuran:

Debajo de la nube gris-presagio de la noche, pasa el monje y cree ver en la nube gris un haikú de algún maestro del pasado. Algo muy suyo se expande entonces en su pecho y lleno de ilusoria plenitud sonríe porque cree haber alcanzado la comprensión en la belleza.
Su paso no distingue, menos aún su ojo que no ve al mendigo en el arroyo: es el Buda mismo que sonríe, pues sin siquiera mirar le ve y se ve a sí mismo, está ahí en él y en todo y en el mismo any moment.
