Mother Teresa of Calcutta was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 17, 1979 and a year later, one of the most significant awards given by the Government of India, this time at the hands of Indira Gandhi . Both awards were granted in recognition of his tireless efforts towards the alleviation of suffering of the poor and the sick.
